Ubuntu Server development summary – 21 August 2018

The purpose of this communication is to provide a status update and highlights for any interesting subjects from the Ubuntu Server Team. Spotlight: Welcome Karl!

This week the canonical-server team welcomed a new member Karl Stenerud into the fold (kstenerud on Freenode). He comes to us with around 20 years as a lead software developer. His broad experience with open source and enterprise software will be a great asset to the team, helping us drive distribution fixes into Ubuntu with greater velocity and quality. Check out Karl’s github profile to see why we need to give the newest Ubuntu pirate a hearty ‘Ahoy Matey!’

cloud-init

  • Cloud-init Stable release update: Xenial and Bionic now have 18.3.9 which introduces OpenStack network rendering from network_data.json, utf-8 fixes for user-data, and a number of SmartOS datasource improvements.
  • tests: disable snap, fix write_files binary [Joshua Powers]
  • Add datasource Oracle Compute Infrastructure (OCI).
  • azure: allow azure to generate network configuration from IMDS per boot.
  • Scaleway: Add network configuration to the DataSource [Louis Bouchard]
  • docs: Fix example cloud-init analyze command to match output. [Wesley Gao]
  • netplan: Correctly render macaddress on a bonds and bridges when provided. (LP: #1784699)
  • tools: Add ‘net-convert’ subcommand command to ‘cloud-init devel’.
  • redhat: remove ssh keys on new instance. (LP: #1781094)
  • Use typeset or local in profile.d scripts. (LP: #1784713)
  • OpenNebula: Fix null gateway6 [Akihiko Ota] (LP: #1768547)

curtin

  • Don’t allow reads of /proc and modprobe zfs through
  • clear-holders: handle missing zpool/zfs tools when wiping (LP: #1782744)
  • clear-holders: rescan for lvm devices after assembling raid arrays (LP: #1783413)
  • vmtest: enable persistent journal and collect at boot time
  • Add timing and logging functions.
  • parse_dpkg_version: support non-numeric in version string. (LP: #1786795)
  • Add main so that ‘python3 -m curtin’ does the right thing.
  • Add subcommand ‘features’.
  • block: use uuid4 (random) when autogenerating UUIDS for filesystems (LP: #1785356)
  • vmtests: Increase size of root filesystems.

Git-ubuntu

  • As part of the onboarding process this week, Karl familiarized himself with git-ubuntu as a first time user and wrote up an excellent summary: How to fix ubuntu packages using git-ubuntu
